- History
The World Pool Masters is a professional 9-ball pool tournament which has been held annually since its inception in 1993. The tournament is renowned for attracting the best players in the world and its fast paced single-elimination format. 2021 will see the likes of David Alcaide (defending champion), Shane Van Boening (3rd WR) and Fedor Gorst (4th WR) battle it out in a race-to-7 to be crowned Masters Champion. Dafabet will title sponsor this year’s World Pool Masters, which will take place at Europa Sports Park, Gibraltar from May 22-25, live on Sky Sports, DAZN and Matchroom.Live.
Formally named the European Pool Masters (until 1995) until other players from other parts of the globe were invited. The extended invitation brought in notable pool legends such as Earl Strickland, Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, names which have propelled the sport around the world. An example of this growth in popularity was in 2011 when the Philippines became the first Asian country to host the World Pool Masters.
Since 1993 the tournaments structure has changed multiple times. This year’s format will feature 24 players, with seeded players being given a bye into the first round. The traditional race-to-8 will be shortened to 7 with the final being a race-to-9. Additionally a 30-second shot clock will be in operation throughout the tournament with each player having one 30-second extension per rack. This added excitement will ultimately lead to a tremendous tournament where a total of $100,000 is up for grabs with the Champion to receive $25,000.
